I am a very new player, and not so good with computers, but used to play "Elite" but my wife found X3 and bought X3 and TC for me. What a lass.
I have had many fun and interesting hours reading all your threads. You are all, way ahead of my abilities, but I have leared from you all and it is good to find so many people intersted in the same enterprise. Thank you all, although, you may not have known it, you are teaching me a great deal. So please keep sending in your words of wisdom. Once again thank you all so very much.

i'm not sure if this thank you was directed towards me at all, but if it was, you're very welcome.

we've all been new at one point or another, and so we all understand how confusing this game can be. i've been playing almost 2 years now, and i still learn new things all the time.

We all start knowing very little about things, but like jacer said it takes time and the willing to learn. I am glad we/I can help, like you said X3/TC are very complex games that just throw you in.

I never really played the first Elite on BBC much. I started playing Elite when it was on the PC. It was the same basic game but better graphics and solid ships. I played it for awhile and then moved to other games. I came back to the Elite series when Elite 2 and Frontier were out. I started playing X-Games when the first game came out and played them ever since. The first X you couldnt change ships, although I preferred the computer voice!

LOL! Funny you should mention Elite, just downloaded it for the trip down memory lane. The wire frame graphics, the fixed firing side ports/turrets. The sun fuel scoop! ahhh to remember. Although it was way too easy to accumulate a mass head start by trading some drugs or slaves early and jumping around until "clean".

As much as I love the X universe, I do miss some of the trading from Elite.

I wouldn't be daunted though by the mods/scripts, I am as "blonde" as they come when talking about codes and the executables, but trial and error lets you learn, apart also from some very seriously cool people who assist and teach on here.

My first ever experience of a space sim style game was Elite 2: Frontier, on the Amiga 500 :p I must've played that on and off for about 3 years. Then sometime around summer 2004 I found the X2 demo on a PC Gamer magazine and...well, the rest, as they say, is history Wink

There are a few things about Frontier that I do miss, the cold war between the Empire and the Federation (you could work for both sides though, which was pretty cool), having to hire a crew for the bigger ships, buying goods that were legal in one sector for a pittance and then selling them on halfway across the universe where they were illegal for huge profits...(sigh)

Good game Smile

I never played the 3rd installment in the series though, although a couple of friends of mine did. It was the first one to introduce alien species to the game, and I think there were X style upgrades, but it's been a long time.

For what it's worth there is an Elite clone called 'Oolite' that's available as a free download. I've not played it myself, but I hear good things Smile

A friend of mine who does a lot of vintage gaming likes to play that. He does mods for it too. I think he said it works on Linux.
