Turret Loadouts

How should I organize my turret loadouts and turret commands?

Try this setup:

Defensive turrets = Flak, Missile Defense.
Offensive turrets = Heavy weapons, Attack My Target.
Cockpit (or, maybe, Front turret) = Swap as appropriate for the op.

The details about why this setup always works:

Missile Defense is important in AP; even more important in DS3. Setting defensive turrets to missile defense with flak or whatever fast weapon the turret can support... that's just common sense.

No script can detect which turrets are the defensive turrets on a given ship. That is a limitation of the MSCI language. You must eyeball the turrets in TShips or in-game and set them appropriately. USUALLY the order is Front, Right, Left, Defense... but that is not guaranteed.

VERY few ships can hit a target with more than two turrets simultaneously; almost always the front turret and one of the sides. So mount heavy weapons in the front turret (or cockpit, in an M7), and on one of the sides.

Prioritize the turret command as you prefer, or simply use Attack My Target, which will fall back to Attack Enemies if the turret cannot hit your target, or if no target is selected.
You can set turret priorities in the Turret Command Configuration settings in the Gameplay menu. You can even create your own custom turret commands there.
For the other side, mount Flak and set to Missile Defense. Optionally you could organize the same way as the other side, if you truly attack on both sides. Most pilots do not, but whatever.

There is zero advantage in mounting heavy weapons in any other turret. No ship (not even M2's) can sustain fire with heavy weapons mounted in all turrets simultaneously.

When you want to stop shooting, use the Turret On/Off Hotkey. (Which, BTW, does not actually turn the turret command completely OFF in DS3. I modified it to change turrets to Missiles Only, so that you never stop having missile defense. You simply stop shooting at your target. This is ideal for managing a target's shields during boarding ops.)

That is all there is to it. No need for weapon swaps in turrets; no need for changing turret commands.

The only turret in which you ever really need to swap weapons is the cockpit. MAYBE the front turret in an M1/M2. The best practice is to use the Weapon Loadouts feature to swap weapons only in the front/cockpit on most ships. (Weapon Loadouts are on the Combat Menu, or use the hotkey).
