The 'light bulb' and other icons are mission indicators.
The Stations and ships sometimes have missions that the player can do to earn money.

The 'light bulb' ones might be patrol missions or retrieve a lost ship.
The 'dollar sign' are 'build-station' missions--you need a TL ship for these.
The red ones--are defend station or assassination jobs--need a ship that can fight.
The orange 'cent' signs are offers to purchase used ships. Use caution here. Make sure the price is better then price to buy new, also "save" the game before buying. In case it turns out not to be a good deal, you can re-start. I do this a lot because some ships in space showing shields and weapons b4 the buy don't have them after

Welcome to the site and the game.
Be prepared to loose all contact with friends and family---but ENJOY!!!

@RoaminChariot hi and welcome to the site Wave

as cjm3fl said, those icons are random missions, where the type of mission is shown by their icon (light bulb, dollar sign, target symbol, green bricks, cent signs etc. These will give you different things to do for some extra money. Some are easy to work out: like the target icon means a fight/kill mission, or the bricks as a build mission. I would suggest you leave kill and build missions until you get used to the game more.

Credits can be a very slow thing to gain at the start, however money usually makes more money. If you wanting to keep safe, maybe some trading might be easier. There's a fairly simple rules with trading: if the item has large amount in-stock, then it will sell for a low price (so maybe best to buy it), however if the good is largely out-of-stock then its a good place to sell. ie. if you go to a power-plant and its nearly full of energy cells, then they will sell for a low price. Then look for a place which is mainly out-of-stock of energy cells, so they buy them for a good place. The same rules work for all the goods in the game. Systems such as Trading system extension (check prices without havign to land) and Best buy/Best sell locator (show the best prices in the current sector) help with trading. You can only buy products, and sell resources.

Anyway, hope that helps

Hi Roguey and cjm3fl. In regards to X3-TC...Thanks for the info in regards to the extra missions, etc. Seems like I need some upgrades in order to take advantage of any of those. I am playing the "Terran Defender" character and am now at the point where I have been given a "Rapier" without any upgrades, guns, missiles or anything. I do not have the creds to upgrade it so I have decided to sell it and maybe invest in a small "TS" or something I can use to build creds trading. I have noticed that there is very little information about ships and their stats and load-outs. Can you guide me to a page or site where I can find out all about the ships stats, loadouts, etc.?? Also... I am running version 3 and I was wondering if a newer version is available will it incorporate into the current version without having to start all over again? I am also wondering if some of the scripts I have read will incorporate into the mod I am playing? I do not exactly know alot about scripts and mods and how to merge them but some of them seem pretty awesome. I will try not to be a pain in the butt with all my inquireries. This game is becoming addictive for sure and I truely appreciate all your help and info. Thanks, Roamin-Chariot.

Sure.
There's a lot of information available right here on this site.
Here's a link to some TC ship info;

Hi cjm3fl and Roguey. Thanks very much for the link to the ship data. It helps me to choose which ship I want to possibly make as my personal ship. I downloaded the walk-through of X3-TC from your site and I am really excited to go looking for the derelict ships and all the freebie stuff. Can you tell me how to find stuff by the co-ordinates of a sector?? I see x,y & z on my screen but no number reference or way to imput co-ordinates. I suppose, of course, I could waste a lot of time just flying all around my target sector looking for whatever I am after in the particular sector. Some numbers in the "Spoiler" are four digit numbers. Some numbers have dots or points or minus signs. I appreciate your help and input on this, Thanks.
Roamin-Chariot. PS... Is there a way to up-load my logo into my game?

x, y, and z...

Open the Sector Map. High-lite something in that Sector, your ship, a Station, another ship, etc. You will notice the number at the lower right will change to tell you that target's x, y, and z position in the Sector.
It took me a while to figure it out too, but by seeing the position of other things in the Sector helped a huge amount.

Several of the abandoned ships are a long distance from the center of the Sector map.
But knowing direction and height helped me find them all, in time.

If you're looking for a recommendation for a 'personal' ship early in the game, find the Iguana Vanguard.
It's the fastest TP and it's a great ship for doing "passenger" mission. Some of those, as your rep increases, will bring in really nice amounts of cash...millions for some of these missions.
I still have my original Iguana Vanguard, the 'Sun Diver', and I still like to jump in it and take a little ride.

hi there, you can use move to position command (in the navigation command list) then adjust the position with the right set of arrow keys (on the numeric keypad). When you move the cursor you will see the bottom right numbers change to that of the cursor, which means x, y and z. Once you have set the correct place, press enter and your ship will goto that place.

Is there a way to up-load my logo into my game?

You used to be able to do that with older x-games, but its kind-of been removed now.

Hi Roguey and cjm3fl. "The Old Guy" ?? That one makes me smile. Not sure if I should go there, ha ha.
OK... Thank you both for the wonderful and useful information. It really helps and saves me lots of time that I can do other things with. Too bad we cannot upload our logos anymore as I think mine is pretty cool. I have been playing X2-TT and I use it there and it looks really cool on all my property. As for X3-TC... I've just started that one a few days ago. I have not found where I can adjust my joystick buttons to what I want, the options i found just wont let me, inside or outside of the game. The top-hat was great for looking around my ship...especially when getting really close to a station or large ship. In "TC" it only moves my ship around like a joystick. OK, next... Looking at all the ships available I notice we cannot buy or board alot of them. So... if I decide I want one of them how do I go about that? Do I have to make the pilot eject or die? I think that would also ruin my standings big time. Ok... I'm sure I will have more issues to ask you about. I really appreciate all your imput. Thanks very much, Roamin-Chariot.

Safe to say I might be one of the older folks playing TC on this site :p

If your "looking" at the ship guide on this site, those with a "0" for the price, or state that they can not be bought or boarded, those are ships that fall into a few "special" categories.
They might be plot-rewards, Corporate-rewards, or abandoned ships that might one-of-a-kind's.

A number of these ships will become available for sale by their pilots at some Stations. You have to get a little more into your game before more of these become available.

Some of the nice ships, like the M7 Griffon, M6 Springblossom, M3+ X-perimental Shuttle, are plot-rewards that you get as "payment" after finishing. And they are not available any other way.

Also, you might want to begin a separate thread for your questions.
Not everyone takes notice of this Introduction one, and I'm sure others will notice a new discussion and can offer additional points of view about things your asking.
