After hours of loosing Capitals and M7's to AI Bomber Craft (usually Hades, Viper or Claymore) I have decided to join the Ranks bite the (missile) and kill some M2-M7. My question is how do you effectively use this thing? as it dies quicker than I do, is the correct thing to do pilot it myself? So far I have only used it as AI backup to myself. Do any of you out there have an effective plan to use this thing? I'm beginning to think I wasted my money as missiles are dear to make and buy also it seems like 6-8 million wasted in it's current state. Any help gratefully appreciated

I'll throw out a few ideas....
One--use more then one Bomber. Group a few into a 'wing' and give the 'wing' your attack orders. To me, Bombers are the one ship that needs to be in a 'wing'
Two--set the "missile fire probability" command for the 'wing' high...maybe 50% to 75%.
Three--"protect me" might encourage your Bombers to fire missiles quicker/more of them.

I've given an M7M the "protect me" order, then was surprised to see missiles being fired over my shoulder while the target was still 25 km away.

It's not what someone has done..it's about what they are about to do!

This is how I use my M8 - which I do still use despite having a couple of M7Ms...

First off, mine is an Auster, it has stats more like an M6, the other bombers are more like fighter stats. In fact, I think other that only having one gun turret and having more cargo space, the Auster is actually a Centaur.

When I find a target, I get in the M8 and jump to the sector the target is in, but far away from the Target.

I scope out the shot - if you're going after a Q that is attacking stations, you need to line up a shot like a sniper in the grass would. You stalk the target, always keeping it as close to the edge of the scanner range as you can - even better if you have a satellite in the sector where the ship is to you can stay 50KM away from it until you have your shot lined up.

Once I get a clear shot lined up with no stations in the way, I run at the target at full speed, starting about 40KM out. Once I get full speed, I start launching a volley at the main target. I throw 10-20 missiles depending on the size of the target, and then come to a complete stop ~25KM out and wait for the glob of missiles to approach the target. If the sector isn't too cloudy, you can watch the mayhem with Video Enhancement Goggles.

Once the first volley hits, I reassess the target and shot, line up again if I need to and repeat, this time with a better idea of how many missiles are likely to be needed to finish the kill.

If the target has M3 escorts, while I am making my missile run, I throw a few at them too, even if they don't stand a good chance of hitting, they keep the fighters occupied while I slink off to a better vantage point.

I have just stood my ground against Ms and Pirate M4s, let the single turret take care of them (I load it with EBCs) and I survived, but if there is a chance of many fighter escorts, I bring my own M4 fighter escorts in a Chokaro or at the very least 10-20 figther drones.

FWIW, this same missile run sniper tactic works just as well with other heavy missiles in M6s. It just takes a whole lot more Hornets to do the same job. A certain M6 with Wraiths using this method can be more effective than an M8 or even an M7M in some situations.

Thanks.

I love to write about X3. I'll have to spend more time here. Smile

One more M8 related piece of advice. There are two Tomahawk Fabs in Merchant's Haven (in my game anyway - they are actually heavy missile complexes IIRC) and there are frequent Q and J incursions into Grand Exchange one sector North (also the only way in to Merchant's Haven.

I leave my Auster parked at the Military Outpost in Merchant's Haven, he gets 40 E-Cells when he docks, and a Chokaro CLS fills him with missiles from the fabs automatically. So when I'm done with the kill, I hop back in my normal player ship and send the Auster to the MO and when I need him again, he's ready.

Because of the frequent Xenon incursions in Grand Exchange (the only way into Merchant's Haven), not much NPC trade gets in to supply the fabs. So you can make a lot of money feeding these fabs their resources - which also ensures there will be plenty of missiles when you need them.

I use CLSes to feed the fabs from the Teladi sectors south of Tears of Greed (East of Merchant Haven) and make good money off of the resources, so if I only break even on playing sniper, I'm still happy.

Nice, Harry, very nice
The Auster was already my favorite , and now all the more!

Question: If I take a wing with me on a mission, and my wing kills targets, do I fail or get less money? (same as when other races help you)

If your ship(s) make the kill, then you should get the reward for the kill.
