Pierre-Loup (Valve): "We're hard at work on many SteamOS-related things, but a lot of it is currently happening in the Steam client itself."

Great news. There has been no updates recently and it is good to hear the reason.

Dont know how I feel about SteamOS. When they first announced, it sounded really exciting. I do like the idea that there is another way than Windows. The last I heard about it, is that games were actually slower on SteamOS? maybe thats just down to optimization?

Yeah, it is great that users are able to use their favorite system for gaming as well.

In most of the cases it is still true. There are many reasons for that and one is optimization. It is not uncommon to see game companies searching high skilled OpenGL programmers. Direct3D has been dominating long time and OpenGL has been quite irrelevant in gaming business.

OpenGL is going to have big changes in upcoming years. First OpenGL 4.5 (already in NVidia beta drivers) and then OpenGL NG. Unfortunately it will take some time before games starts to support them. Pretty much all games are still using OpenGL 3.3 which is soon 5 years old. The only OpenGL 4.4 games I know are upgraded versions of Metro series and those are not released yet.

One other important thing is that AMD and Intel drivers are still much worse than on Windows. NVidia drivers are in much better condition and OEM Steam Machines are using NVidia. Intel is working hard to improve their drivers and AMD is going to make huge changes to their driver next year. Things are going to improve a lot although it will take some time.

Personally I don't think SteamOS / Steam Machines are going to be big in many years but I hope that SteamOS will be here to stay. The start is not going to be easy because drivers situation, OpenGL support and lack of AAA titles.

It will be interesting to see how Valve is going to represent SteamOS and Steam Machines; competitor to other platforms or just a new alternative. I think it is just a new way to play games and gives gamers more freedom to their platform.

As a programmer and full time Linux users (except of some Windows games) SteamOS is of course most interesting platform for me. I just started my first SteamOS project developed on Raspberry Pi. First I had to setup RPi development platform; installed Raspbian to external HD and built RPi->SteamOS cross-compiler. Now I'm able to write software with RPi to SteamOS.

Beyond Earth dev: "Though not official yet, it’s likely we’ll drop support for Intel and ATI graphics cards on Linux platforms prior to the game’s launch on Linux."

BIG UPDATE: "Both AMD and Intel have been quick and eager to help with these issues.  With their guidance, we’ve made great improvements over the last 24 hours and while there is still a lot of work to do, we are confident that support for both chipsets will be implemented asap.  We will be back with more info next week, but we wanted to give a heartfelt thanks to the fine folks at AMD and Intel for their help!"
