Multi-crew turrets are not working

A friend and I have been trying to fly multi-crew; we were able to join, put him in gunner role, assign firing groups (and multicrew controls for those firing groups as well as mode switch), confirm that my ship has turrets, and take a bounty mission. However, the turrets say "No line of sight" on his interface, and when I engaged the bounty they began firing on their own.
