One thing EA Pacific (formerly Westwood Pacific) has done was take in to account physics when developing Generals. Cars jump over hills, building collapse correctly, pressure waves strike trees over and many other effects enrich the new C&C branch. Enormous explosions can throw tanks in to the air, the effects are breath taking. The flame columns of the Dragon tanks can cause them to burn. This opens up new tactical strategies, giving the characteristics of the landscape a particularly important role.
