Anywayz there is a new Renegade Article over at Westwood Unleashed It talks about the faillures and succesions of Renegade this is also a very good article(by ZeroUSSR), but not so good as the one from Shinano(the generals article). For your reading pleasures, go here
As always, here is a snippet:
Westwood. Whenever a gamer hears that word they automatically think two things: Command and Conquer, and Real Time Strategy, or RTS. Westwood has graced the RTS world in many ways. Starting off in 1995 with the original Command and Conquer, known as Tiberian Dawn, where the two supreme world powers battled eachother. The Global Defense Initiative, packed with state of the art weaponry and heavy duty firepower, had to overcome one of the biggest and deadliest terrorist network in the world, the mysterious Brotherhood of Nod. Tiberian Dawn was a game all about strategy and war, making it a quick hit. At this same time, developers were devising plans for a game that would focus on the heroes, GDI. They also tried to come up with a main character to set the spotlight on in an upcoming game, which would later be revealed as Command & Conquer: Renegade. Instead of making this game an RTS, Westwood changed tracks and went into the realm of the First Player Shooters. This new genera would give us a new insight on the already famous, C&C Series. Yet whenever someone tries something new, they usually fail somehow, and must try again to regain what they wanted to accomplish. In part of saying this, Westwood was used to having 2D pictures depicting wars, along with Full Motion Videos. They had to make a huge move to having an FPS 3D view, and having Computer Generated Images, or CGI, doing their cutscenes. They then announced Renegade to the public, catching the eye of other diehard FPS fans, yet lost some diehard C&C RTS fans. When Renegade went on the market, its sales sky rocketed. It hit the charts for several weeks as #1, and then later dropped lower in the charts in the top 10. Yet in what areas did this transformed Command and Conquer game succeed, to make it in the #1 spot in the charts? And where did it fail to drop off of the top 10?
I think this is really the last for today(you will never know )
