Just my personal opinion but I think that some of the in-game ships should be re-classifications as---
--M7's and M7M's should be re-classified as "Cruisers".
--M6's should be thought of as "Frigates".
--M8's should be considered "Missile Corvettes".

Present NATO and U.S. naval 'Cruisers' are large ships what can handle a wide range of missions.
They can conduct missions on their own, can be the major ship in an action group, or can be used in groups as major protection units of a task force.
In-game M7's are limited to what Stations they can dock with because of their large size. They can handle a number of missions, offensively and defensively.

Present day 'Frigates' are smaller, faster ships that can have a large range of weapons load-out. In groups they can be a formidable force. Their smaller size allows them to dock at many piers and small docks.
As part of a task force they are very important in the role of protection.
They could/would be used in the role of escort of commercial ships plus troop and equipment transport ships.

'Missile Corvettes' are smaller still and are used by some NATO and non-NATO navies as patrol craft that are capable of taking on capital ships with their missile systems. Grouped together, they make a substantial threat that should not be ignored.

Like I said, it's just the way I see these ships.
"Let me take that Aquilo-class M7M 'Cruiser' out to mess with the Xenon. And I'll bring some of those Gladiator-class M8 'Missile Corvettes' along for fun."

Well me personally would like to see the classes re-ordered. Its messy having tagged on ships such as Corvettes, Frigates, bombers etc. at the bottom of the M numbers. I really dont know why ego didnt knock-down the numbers. In-game they could simply say: Due to the introduction of a new class of ships, the M3 has been replaced with a new Frigates class. etc..

Yea it would of been a little confusing for us at first, but it would make much more sense to newer players.

It's a nice idea Roguey, but it have have screwed with the continuity of the series. Remember that M3/4/5 class ships have been around since at least X2, if not X:BTF. I agree there should have been a different way of doing it, but to have the M3 as a fighter in one game and a Frigate in the next would have been shoddy workmanship in my opinion.

I've had the same thought about how the disjointed listing of the "M" classing came about.
I spent a number of years in one of the U.S. maritime services so I'm kinda familiar with this kind of confusion with ship/craft classing.

But I have to agree with Kirland. Changing it now wouldn't look very 'professional'.

I like it how it is, it seems right as it is. I think have there own little world when it comes to classes, but for extreme X players it works.

Just to clarify....
I'm not looking for a change to be made to the game.
It's just in my mind I see M7's as 'Cruisers', M6's as 'Frigates', and M8's as 'Missile Corvettes/Patrol Craft'.

I play my game as if these ships were filling these different classes/positions.

hmm.. maybe ego could of ditched the old numbering system then? ie. use 3 letters to abbreviate the ship class, such as:

DES
CAR
FRI
COR
FIG
INT
SCO

etc. A number system is so limiting.
