Am I doing something wrong or is a Caravel impossible to board without taking casualties??? I tried boarding one with 6 4-star marines (all 3 star fighting, 4+ star hacking, 4+ star mechanical, 4 star engineering) and I would always get AT LEAST 1 casualty per deck, a few times 2!! I was only trying to train a new batch, and the caravel had no sentry lasers, hull pol. device or any marines on board, just a firewall software (which when I let 4 of my marines attempt to hack the core they succeeded both times). Am i doing something wrong, or is this just bullshit??

TMs and M6 are much harder to board than the capitals mate. I put it down to a small team fighting in close quarters Wink

In all seriousness, I don't even try to take them without 6 maxed fight skill marines (5 when I'm flying my HCP). Anything less than that guarantees me casualties, every time.

Really? Wow, that's bad.... How do you train fighting in marines then? M7's? Or do you just buy them high level?

P.S I used the cheat pack to put the marines up to 4, then 5 stars in fighting (just to experiment). Both times I had at least 1 casualty per deck; even more retardedly, on one of my tests with 5 star fighting marines, all of them got wiped on the first deck! That's not unlikely, that's just bad programming...

Civilian TLs. Casino Ship, Arenas, Hospital Ships. They hang out in core sectors, and they're never armed. Ever. Worst case scenario, you have to fry Adv. firewall or other countermeasures with Ions before launching the pods. Best case...

Drop the shields with your PBEs and launch the pods before the locals even notice you. Big grin

Sounds like bad luck to me. Maybe you angered the almighty RNG? :p I have a regular 5 man squad for boarding, haven't lost one in over 25 M6 caps (with a couple of reloads of course) :p

Hey, that's a good idea, and I do need another mammoth... Do those sort of ships re-spawn eventually? Also, how many marines do you reckon is the minimum to take that sort of TL? I have a few still in training...

Yeah, they re-spawn, quite frequently IIRC. You can take them with 10 marines, but I like to throw a full batch into the mix, then work with the survivors. Even with 16+ 2* fighters you're only likely to lose 5-7. At worst.

Interestingly, if you then add green mercs to your boarding crew to bring their numbers up, they have a better chance of survival. I frequently end up with 5-10 2* or lower fight skill marines mixed in with my 4s and 5s. The 2s soon become 3s, the maxed guys go back to school to become elites (100 in everything), and the whole chain keeps on moving. Piracy is an industry after all! :p

Yeah, I noticed that too, since when I capped my Carrack I had 10 5* total marines (4* in fight) accompanied by 11 nooby 2* total or less (some had no stars in anything!) and only lost 2 after a few reloads; i'll use that technique, great for the next batch as you say! Big grin

I was just trying to train some of my marines fighting rank, and I thought that would be an easy target. Apparently not....
Next time I'll just use Kirlacks idea and board civilian TL's, or some of the Carracks that are pouring out of Loomanckstrats; when ever I look at great trench there is always at least 2.... Another idea I found is that some people will hire one of the supply TLs, send it to an empty or unknown sector and board it there; apparently it just sits there until you breach the hull, and by that time it's too late for him...

scan all the ships if you can before boarding . I do if possible, so I know what I am boarding, if sentry lasers ,no go till 4 star fighting, pol hull need 4 star. Advance firewall
needs 4 star hacking, takes time and cash but hey they look good on my wall. When I have marines that are4and 5 star in all areas ships should fear me because if I like it its mine .

Heh heh, space captains fear the almighty Scott and his elite boarding crews! Don't piss him off or you'll end up with your own ship shooting at you!!
Yeah, I usually try to buy all 4 star fight marines, then train them up to 4 star in everything else, then try boarding big things. Most of the time, if I see hull poll. or sentry lasers I'll destroy it with ions; firewall has never seemed to affect me much...

With 4star marines who cares?.Never found pol. Hul l they cannot cut thru., not a firewall they can not jack. Internal lasers bit diffent, but 4stat.can,normally take them with no loses.

When you say to take out internal lasers and firewall with ions what do you mean? And what type of ship do you use for boardings?

I have also thought of trying to obtain one of the hired TLs by the method mentioned by Scott. It would be a form of betrayal but if your a pirate then they should expect that.

Well any laser that does hull damage can remove equipment such as internal lasers and firewalls. However the Ion-D can do that too without damaging the hull, once the shields have been lowered. Although the Ion-D has limited use, because its not powerful enough to bring the shields down of larger ships.

That depends on the ship firing them Roguey, not the Ions themselves. For instance, I use my Griffon in TC for stripping and subduing M1/2/7/7M ships for boarding. You have to consider the laser generator on a given ship, not just the weapons it carries Wink
