Well in the end it just got too frustrating. Trying to do the mission where you need to get 5 x Xenon components. Despite repeated excursions into Xenon occupied space and spending a fortune on missiles and hull repairs, not to mention the tedium of the long trek back to civilisation, I didn't yield a single required item. Taking on 6 x M's in the Skunk is an almost impossible task, even after going to "Easy" level and manipulating my Argon rating to buy Level 4 shields. And forget going anywhere near a Xenon cap ship in the Skunk, ripped apart in seconds. So decided to pull the plug, uninstalled and shredded the save files.

Nice try Egosoft but in the end the game failed on so many levels. In X3, before doing that sort of mission you would be flying an M6 at the least, with fighter support and maybe the Boreas on standby to jump in and help out. The whole concept seemed flawed though, rushed and borked. The basis of the Universe to list just one example - here we have four star systems cut off from each other for years. Yet they all seem to have developed have the same lane travel, nearly identical space stations, the tech from one system is identical to that in another, the list goes on.

If they ever do another X game, hopefully lessons will be learned and the developer will return to an updated version of the tried and trusted gameplay and campaign system of previous games.

That seems like some really bad luck Cry It feels like they have dropped from killed Xenon fighters more frequently than that during my plot play-throughs.

To be fair, the plot has given you a Taranis by this point, which is M2-esque. Taking that bad boy with you into Xenon space will see Xenon fighters shredded in seconds. Couple that with undocking to use the loot magnet near the wrecks (visible on the HUD' map) and Xenon Components should become hovered up without too much time investment.

It's also more than a match for a Xenon K, plus it's escort if you're able to support with dog-fighting and missiles. With a 5* Engineer on the Taranis, it can self-repair to 90% armour (95% of total hitpoints) so it's a good bullet sponge to offset only being able to repair the Skunk on stations.

Edit: Typo

Rats. I just assumed the ships given you were clunky freighters of one sort or another.

Unfortunately, when I uninstalled I deleted all my save games so will need to start from scratch to put this to the test.
