With the AP war constantly putting far superior forces in front of my wind screen I kind of developed a habit of fighting dirty. And when I say dirty I mean moves that would make arthurs knights run back home to their mother and forget all about the round table. I guess some of you know what I mean.

So why not share them I thought and here's the thread just for that! I wonder how many moves we'll manage to collect ^^.

1. Nuke Jump.

what you need:
1. Jump Drive
2. A few nukes (just collect some Hammerheads in the war sectors)
3. Enough energy cells for a few jumps
4. Weapons with high shield damage (optional)
5. Basic shields (1x25 MJ is enough, you most likely won't need it anyways)
6. Basic flying skills
7. Knowledge of the blind spots of your targets
8. A fighter that can mount the stuff ... doh

what you do:
1. Engage a ship you don't like and make it follow you
2. Tow your new friend to the nearest gate
3. Fly into the enemies blind spot
4. Start your jump drive (target the nearby gate)
5. Damage his shields with your pew pew lasers (optional)
6. With the jump counter at 90% point your ship towards the enemies hull
7. The second the voice says "Jump" launch your nuke
8. Watch the story unfold
9. If necessary rinse and repeat Wink

why would I do that?:
This neat little slightly unethical move is quite nice to bounce your fight rank sky high early on. Especially if used against carriers the moment they launch a fighter wing ... just guess why Wink. This is how I got my "Defender of the Universe" achievement by the way :P.

Oh and in case you're wondering: Every M2 and M1 has at least one large blind spot: its front turret array which is usually packed with anti capital weapons that are utterly useless against fighter pilots with opposeable thumbs.

I like this thread. Unfortunately I have no moves at all. Well one move...point at ship, shoot at ship, pray I dont blow up. I will be keeping this thread on my list to check as I really would love to learn more from you all about the combat.
Which sector do you find the best chance to obtain some Hammerheads?

Wherever the vanilla war plots the fights or after (failed) Xenon invasions (most likely in Grand Exchange and Zyarth's Dominion.

2. Revenge of the Asteroids!

what you need:
1. A large number of enemies following you (preferably not larger than M6)
2. An asteroid in the near vicinity
3. A missile with similar damage properties to the Hornet
4. Some basic flying skills
5. A fighter able to fire the missile ... doh!

what you do:
1. Fly towards the asteroid
2. Strafe halfway around the asteroid
3. Wait until the enemies have neatly arranged themselves around the asteroid
4. Fire your missile into the asteroid so it breaks apart
5. Quickly fly into an empty space between the debris before it becomes solid again
6. Watch enemies suddenly go boom left right and center

why would I do that?:
It's fun?

3. Sector ablaze (!!! CANNOT BE UNDONE !!!)

what you need:
1. Two capital ships from different races (with either "military" or "escort" in their names)
2. The races must be friendly or neutral to each other
3. Both ships have to be armed with anti capital weapons on at least some slots
4. At least one opposable thumb
5. Rather neat flying skills
6. A fighter ... duh!

what you do:
1. Position yourself between both capital ships
2. The AI will shoot at you with its anti-capital weaponry
3. Evade the shots for a while
4. You'll notice that after a while the ships will start shooting each other
5. Every ship belonging to either of the two races will almost instantly join in
5. Get the heck out of the way and enjoy the show Eek

why would I do that?:
A whole sector constantly refilling itself with random loot is a nice thing Wink. However be aware the only way I've found to end this is to kill all involved ships.

This sometimes happens naturally between Terrans and ATF in their sectors. It's a result of capital ships accidently destroying fighters of the others military while trying to kill an enemy. Usually it's caused by missile accidents or collisions.

lol, thats some great tactics.

myself I use gorilla tactics when trying to take on RRF ships with a M2;

- Jump to enemy sector, wait for RRF ships,
- Engage but after a few seconds set the jump-drive on (but only jump to a gate in the same sector),
- Engage again, then jump to another gate, and so on.

Yeah RRF ships have a very special place in my heart. The place that usually hurts a lot. However they are quite handy too if you want your enemy to blow up his own stations (hint) Wink.

3. Sector ablaze (!!! CANNOT BE UNDONE !!!)

Loving this enough to try. Can't even believe I didn't think of this, concidering every time I Shift-L'led because some idiot thought it fun to use that plasma flame-thrower thingy at 1 enemy with 20 friends surrounding it, including myself...or the times that some idiot thought the safest place to hide is between me and my target...

Had some questions from friends on how the heck do you kill a Xenon Q with and M3...Now I don't concider myself to be a great pilot, or even a mere good one for that matter, but a very long barrel-roll with the target in the center usually works miracles. <90% of its fire just misses completely, and since weapons seem to dissipate over range (do less damage) you really want to stick close with you target. Not sure if this qualifies as 'Dirty' fighting or a tutorial though...

Keep in mind it only works for Ships with either "Military" or "Escort" in their names, because they are the ones who share friend/foe data.

The AI uses only linear speed to calculate your future position. However due to your barrel roll you have both a linear and an angular velocity. So as long as some portion of your linear velocity points away from your enemy and you go with sufficient speed physics dictates your enemy to miss. Only works in small ships though, because the larger you get, the higher the linear velocity you need to make the enemy miss you. You can quite easily exploit that by combining barrel rolls and strafing. It's only dirty fighting if you know stuff like that though Wink.

An easier way to kill a Xenon Q is to exploit the massive blind spot it's got all over the sides. You'll notice you're in it when all turrets suddenly cease fire (like 20m away from the hull). Don't get too close to the rear though because that one has no proximity blind spot and covers a small portion of the sides as well. You can use match speed and strafing to remain in the blind spot indefinitely. Xenon capitals are the masters of blind spottiness after all.

Indeed, I remmeber doing this a few times with a M6. For me the bind-spot can be difficult to get into (left/right side - between front and stickie out engine), but once in there its fairly easy to stay in it. Once there, just hammer away and finally (after much time) the Q will be gone. Although its hard work to-do with something like M3, which isnt much fun - unless you enjoy David vs Goliath matches.

It helps to have some Banshees / Typhoons / Tornados on board to help with the damage. Since the blind spot is so enormous you can park an M6 in there the chances of the Q intercepting your missiles are basically non-existent.

Banshees are usually my first choice since they're free. Whenever I enter a war sector there's usually countless Banshee crates floating around. Not to mention they have a pretty nice Cargo Space to damage ratio and no area of effect unless they're shot down the moment they're launched.

Lol, didn't expect this many reactions this fast, but agreed, its AI is somewhat limited and with fighters one is pretty safe.

Personally don't like to use missile, or any ammo based weapon, unless I just happen to have some from a previous victim. Even then I'd rather just save em up and sell them in bulk.

Regarding the use of an M3 to do this, 2 or 3 passes is usually enough and said encounter shouldn't have to take more than a minute. And you really shouldn't use the blind spots if you really think its not much fun Wink

Make sure its a government target, got it.

One of my favorites is to cap ships from allies then rebuild rep hit afterward. Makes stuff nice and simple
For capping capitals, I use a Thresher with PPC and IC's
follow in close, Full charge attacks until shields are almost gone, order Sirokos to board, Start Jump drive for in system gate, at 50, charge attack remove shields. Order sirokos to jump as soon missiles away.

If you're feeling like an extra sneaky git another way is to order the boarding pod strike, wait until the marines finished hacking the mainframe (but before they transfer control) and tell the captain it was an accident so he becomes friendly again. You still get the ship, but loose no rep for it because being given a ship is not a hostile act LOL.

For solo aggressive capital ships M1, M2 (Xenon) A Thresher loaded with PPC's is great.
Run away with the capital ship in tow, At 12k or so, flip around and go nose to nose.. Charge and fire (Should be about 10k when it fires).. Then flip around again and run to make the 12k distance again. (Rinse, repeat)
You should be able to strip shields/Kill without ever breaking range for any counterattack (Except missiles)

Note: Distances are variable dependent on enemy ship's relative speed.

It's kinda cheap and one sided but it works.
The PPC shots are slow moving and long ranged. By the time they reach their maximum range, The enemy ship moves into range.
