Multi-crew

In v2.3 Multi-crew was added. Multi-crew allows commanders to either join other commanders, or to open up their ship for others to join. Frontier wanted to make the process quick and easy, so they created an LFG system (Looking For Group). LFG systems are commonly found in MMO's, to make it easier to find other players wanting to do the same activities.

To access the LFG system, check-out your coms panel (normally accessed by pressing 2). Once there, scroll across the tabs and select Multi-crew. In this tab we can look for a crew (open your ship to others to join) or join someone else's ship.

When looking for a group, we can select from two game-types; lawful and lawless. In lawful games, any illegal activities (such as shooting innocent commanders) will be punished by removal from the group. This is to help stop random commanders spoiling the fun. In lawless games pretty much anything goes.

So once we joined some commanders, we have 3 roles. The Helmsman flies the ship, controls all fixed/gimbal weapons, decides on power relocation and the FSD. They pay for any rebuy costs; but will receive a discount on the amount of crew on-board. If a Helmsman has crew, they cannot also wing with other ships too.

Next we have the gunner role. The Gunner is responsible for controlling turreted weapons, missiles and scanners (if the Helmsman has installed them). To aid the gunner, he/she can switch to an external view which allows much faster targeting. To target a ship, all the gunner needs to do is to have the ship within the centre of the screen. If the ship hasn't been scanned, then it will be automatically. There can be only one gunner per ship. Most of the controls for the gunner needs to be setup in the controls menu. The gunner is able to place one extra pip on the power distribution system, marked by a light-blue pip.

And lastly we have the fighter role. In this position, a commander can pilot a ship launched fighter. In v2.3 and later, two fighters can be launched - so 2 human pilots can assume the fighter role. If you are killed whilst flying a fighter, you will respawn on the main ship. The controls are pretty much the same as normal.

So now we talked about the various roles, we need to decide on which role we would like to do. The Helmsman is determined by the person who searched for crew in the first place. The Helmsman role cannot be taken over by other commanders, and must be the owner of the ship. The fighter and gunner roles can be taken by any crew members and be swapped at any-time. To select a role, use the menu at the bottom (typically 3);

For the time being any rewards earnt will be equally given to all members of the ship, and will not be split. This is to encourage players to work together. Unfortunately this does not include exploration, but would allow commanders to visit them.
